Dr. Alan Kaiser: Archaeology and Scandal:  The Adventures and Secrets of Mary Ellingson

University of Evansville archaeology Professor Alan Kaiser explores the mystery of former UE professor Mary Ellingson as it is told in his latest book, Archaeology, Sexism, and Scandal:  The Long-Suppressed Story of One Woman’s Discoveries and the Man Who Stole Credit for Them.  Kaiser stumbled across a scrapbook Ellingson made after her participation in 1931 in one of the great American excavations in Greece at the site of Olynthus.  Ellingson was a trench supervisor, managing up to 60 Greek workmen at a time, something few women were allowed to do in her day.  She also made significant contributions to the study of ancient Greek figurines.  In her scrapbook Ellingson left behind not only her ground-breaking story but also clues to a mystery Kaiser was able to solve, uncovering the worst case of plagiarism in the history of classical archaeology.  Ellingson’s is a story of archaeology, friendship, secrets, and betrayal that should serve to shock but also, ultimately, to inspire.

Dr. Kaiser’s book is available in the shop at the Reitz Home. He will be available to sign copies after the lecture.
